Bronisław Baczko

Bronisław Baczko ( born June 13, 1924 in Warsaw, Poland) is a philosopher, historian and author of Polish descent, who now (2012 ) is a Swiss citizen.

Life

Baczko closed the University of Warsaw in 1957 with the Dr. phil. from after he had in 1953 acquired the Licence des lettres there. He was only an assistant and later professor at the Faculty of the University of Warsaw in the period from 1952 until 1968. During these years he dominated the thinking of a whole generation of Marxist intellectuals of Poland Leszek Kolakowski, or as Adam Schaff, the so-called Warsaw School. For political reasons, he was released in connection with the March 1968 unrest in Poland.

As a result Baczko went into exile, first to France, where he taught from 1969 to 1973 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Clermont -Ferrand. Since 1974 he was an adjunct professor of intellectual history and history at the University of Geneva and was there from 1977 to his retirement in 1989 full professor. Since this year, he is an honorary professor of the University of Geneva. In 1990 he was Visiting Professor at the Collège de France. His research and publications since the time of his exile also deal with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.

His book of Job ... was nominated for the Polish literary award Nike.
