It was founded by Father André Coindre, who called the first fraternity in the Diocese of Lyon ( France) to life in 1821. He became the first Superior General, he was succeeded after his death, his brother Father Vincent Coindre. The study conducted in 1840 General Assembly of the General Chapter suggested a reorientation of the congregation and asked the Archbishop of Lyon, the non- clerical and secular independence. This agreed with the proposal and recommended that the former religious superior, Father Coindre should stand for election office. On September 13, 1841 he was succeeded in this office the first secular brother, Brother Polycarp (see: Polycarp of Smyrna ). He conducted a reorganization and thus ensured the stability and the sustained component of the Congregation. When Brother Polycarp died in 1859, there was a congregation of 73 communities with 400 brothers and 70 schools. The General House of the Congregation is present in Rome. Currently, brother José Ignacio Carmona Ollo exercises the office of Superior General.
