Brownanthus kuntzei

Brownanthus is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ).

Description

The species of the genus are Brownanthus reach low -lying to upright shrubs with fibrous roots, the plant height of 15 to 100 centimeters. The jointed internodes are weak lignified. The green bark is succulent and contains additional vascular bundles with densely packed, xeromorphen, large bladder cells. Your almost cylindrical leaves are blunt triangular or rinnig. The leaves are arranged throughout decussate. They are free or fused at the base with each other briefly. The leaves fall off soon or survive as a leather-like thorns. They include central water-storing cells and loosely arranged, mesomorphic bladder cells.

The flowers appear singly or form cymes and have a diameter of from 5 to 25 millimeters. The four to five sepals are fused at their base shortly and continuously maintained during the flowering period. The white or cream-colored petals are not fused together at the base. Filamentous staminodes absent. The nectaries are narrow. The capsule is one or many ovules available.

The three-to fünffächrigen capsule fruits have wing flaps. The source strips of capsules are fused in the center of the fruit together. The fruit capsules contain numerous or one to three, brown to off-white, D- shaped or pear-shaped seeds. The seeds measure 1 to 1.5 millimeters in diameter. Your seed coat is rough or more or less smooth.

Systematics and distribution

The genus is widespread Brownanthus in southwest Angola, Namibia and the South African provinces of Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape in winter and summer rainfall areas.

The first description was in 1927 by Gustav Schwantes. The genus belongs to the subfamily Brownanthus Mesembryanthemoideae within the family of Mesembryanthemum plants. The type species is Brownanthus ciliatus.
