Brunellia

The Brunellia are the only plant genus of the family Brunelliaceae in the order of the sorrel -like ( Oxalidales ) within the angiosperms ( Magnoliophyta). Spanish common names are Cedrillo or Crespilla.

Occurrence

They are a family with purely Neotropical distribution, so they are found only in the New World, more or less in the mountains of Central and South America from Mexico to Bolivia and the Caribbean Islands.

Description

The Brunellia species are evergreen, tall trees. The mostly opposite or rarely lively arranged on the branches leaves are rarely simple, usually pinnate one or more parts. The stipules are small.

Are formed zymöse or Rispige inflorescences. The small, radial symmetry, usually four to five petals are hermaphrodite or unisexual. If the flowers are unisexual, then the plants are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The perianth consists of only (four to eight) usually five fused at the base bloom cladding. There are two circles, each with four or five (rarely seven ) of free, fertile stamens present. The generally four to five (two to eight ) carpels are free.

The fruit is composed of several hairy follicles, each containing only one or two seeds.

System

Most closely related are the Cephalotaceae Dum. with her only carnivorous species Cephalotus follicularis. In the genus Brunellia and thus in the family there are about 55 to 64 kinds. Here the list of species according to the World Checklist Project of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew:
