The Brunnenburg below Castle Tyrol
The Brunnenburg (Italian Castel Fontana ) is a high medieval hillside castle in Dorf Tirol near Merano in South Tyrol.
History
The castle was probably built around 1250 by the Tyrolean noble family of Taranten; secured is the edification of the oldest parts for at least the 13th century. In 1900 the ruins of the German industrialist Karl Schwickert from Pforzheim was reconstructed in historical style. After the Second World War they bought Mary and Boris de Rachewiltz.
Mary de Rachewiltz is the daughter of American poet Ezra Pound and Olga Rudge the violinist. Pound remained from 1958 to 1962 on the Fontana Castle and there wrote the last of his 120 " Cantos ", his main work.
Plant
The historically original shape is reminiscent of the royal castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria and the Rhenish castle style.
Today the castle is not only family seat of the de Rachewiltz family, but also houses the " Ezra Pound literature center " (The Ezra Pound Center for Literature). It is attended by students from all over the world to study the works of the poet.
The fountain castle also houses the Agricultural Museum Brunnenburg about peasant culture in South Tyrol, which can be visited.
