Budapest-Marathon

The Budapest Marathon ( official name Spar Budapest International Marathon to the sponsor savings ) is a marathon, which takes place since 1984 in Budapest and is one of the most frequented in Europe. The program also includes Ekidens for three - and five - relay races, and since 2006, a 30 - km race, which starts at km 12.195 of the marathon route.

History

Since 1961, were held in Budapest a year in autumn marathons, but were open to only elite runners. Therefore, in 1984 the current event with the sponsor IBUSZ was launched, which was also directed to amateur athletes. The following year, it was possible to include the city center in the course, and in 1987 the Budapest Marathon became the first Eastern European event a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races ( AIMS). During the fall marathon was discontinued after 1990, the new event continues to flourish, however, came after 1993 had replaced Mars as the title sponsor IBUSZ, in financial difficulties, so they paused in 1994 and 1995. With Kaiser's Plus as a new sponsor of the 1996 run was continued, from now on with an autumn date. First time in 1998, the Hungarian championship was integrated into the race. With the acquisition of the Hungarian Plus markets by the Spar Österreichische goods trade AG 2008 changed the official name of the event.

Route

The start is on the Heldenplatz. First, it goes on Andrássy út in the inner city of Pest. After passing the Opera House and St. Stephen's Basilica, one reaches the Danube at the height of Elisabeth Bridge. Now follow the Danube upstream, past the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the shoes on the bank of the Danube and the Parliament building to the Margaret Bridge. About this pushing to Margaret Island, one goes through in its length and leaves again on the Árpád Bridge. Downstream leads on the left bank of the Danube back to Margaret Bridge, running the above happened piece in the opposite direction and goes further south on the Petőfibrücke on the right bank of the Danube to Buda. A turning point distance of about five kilometers that leads predominantly to the south, is completed before it goes back on the Petőfibrücke on the Pest side and is run again along the Danube up to the Margaret Bridge. After another U-turn, turn at the Parliament Building from the west. The course will now describe an arc which passes the Westbahnhof and the starting area of north-west approaches. One and a half kilometers to bend the track at the Museum of Fine Arts in the City Park from where the target is located on the Olof Palme promenade near the timewheel.
