Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee

Buddhadeb Bhattacharya ( Bengali: বুদ্ধদেব ভট্টাচার্য Buddhadeb Bhattacarya; born March 1, 1944 in Kolkata ) is a politician of the Communist Party of India ( Marxist) (CPI (M)). Since 6 November 2000, he is the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was elected in 2000 1985 Member of the Central Committee and the Politburo of his party.

Political career

Bhattacharya studied Bengali literature at the Presidency College in Kolkata. After graduating in 1964, he became in 1966 a member of the CPI ( M) and was active in the youth organization of the party.

In 1977 he was the first time ( for his former constituency, the Municipality Kashipur Kolkata ) West Bengal elected to Parliament and appointed in the new left-wing government led by Jyoti Basu to information and culture minister. In the subsequent election he lost his seat in Kashipur and then joined in 1987 at Jadavpur. At once the ministerial post, he was reassigned.

In the 90s he entered, become some aspects of his party critical of return. After the 1996 election he was re- Information and Culture Minister and received added parts of the inner resorts. Jyoti Basu introduced in 2000 after nearly 24 years of the government in his office available. Bhattacharya became his successor. He is considered a moderate, efficient and politicians could unite the various wings of his party behind him.

Bhattacharya's image as an incorruptible " Mr. Clean " helped his party, despite high spirits for the Trinamul Congress ( TC) of Mamata Banerjee, the sixth victory in a row. In his time as head of government in West Bengal, he is a reformed economic policies. Foreign investment and generally the creation of new industries were promoted. Part of this industrialization policy was, inter alia, the planned construction of the car factory of Tata Motors in Singur for the construction of the " Tata Nano ". The settlement failed, however, and Tata moved the project to Gujarat, since the right-wing opposition party Trinamul Congress ( TC ) and the Communist Party of India (Maoist ) calling for resistance against the settlements and incited parts of the local population to acts of violence, the Maoists also practiced militant operations against it.

Bhattacharya's policy is not without controversy within the Communist Party, including criticism was that, some small farmers have been disadvantaged in the acquisition of the necessary land for industrialization. In the recent parliamentary elections in 2006, the coalition government could, however, again to gain seats under his leadership and now represents more than 75 percent of the deputies.

Personal

Bhattacharya also has poems ( Chena Phooler Gondho - " The Fragrance Of The Known Flowers" ), and written for the stage, as well as translated works of Gabriel García Márquez and Vladimir Mayakovsky into Bengali. He is an admirer of Rabindranath Thakur's songs ( Rabindra sangit ) and Cricketfan.

He has a daughter named Suchetana with his wife Meera.
