Buen Retiro Park

The Retiro Park ( Parque del Buen Retiro also officially Jardines del Buen Retiro or shortly El Retiro ) is a 1.4 km ² large park in the heart of Madrid. 17,500 park trees have been planted as part of a two-day civil action in the fall of 1979, young trees, spades and hoes were made available to the voluntary planting columns of the city administration.

Originally on the site of the park was a palace that was built in 1632 under the rule of Philip IV, but was almost completely destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. The still existing buildings house museums.

The park is home to the Estanque del Retiro an artificial lake, which is close to the Mausoleum of Alfonso XII. is located.

Another attraction is the Palacio de Cristal, which is the London Crystal Palace modeled. This glass pavilion was designed in 1887 by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. In addition, interest is the Rosaleda del Retiro, a rose garden, which of D.Cecilio Rodríguez ( former director of the Office of green space in the Madrid Town Hall) was built in 1915.

A special feature is the statue of the Angel Caído ( German: fallen angels), one of the few sculptures depicting Lucifer, which is (probably by accident ) at an altitude of 666 m above sea level ( Alicante). The statue was created in 1877 by sculptor Ricardo Bellver the Madrid, where he was inspired by the poem Paradise Lost by John Milton. In 1879 it was decided to set up the plant in the park, where the ensemble was inaugurated ( with pedestal and fountain ) 1885.
