Interspersed between these scenes, there are shots that are incurred when traveling through Havana. The camera's gaze beating about the bush, shows very clearly the morbid charm of the Cuban capital, with partly ruined, but busy streets.

The concert clips from New York to be interrupted with film documentation of the exploring of Cuban artists in New York. Many of the artists have traveled in connection with the concert for the first time in North America. In the German version of the film with subtitles is shown. The lyrics of the performed songs appear as subtitles.

Background

The idea for the film evolved from the original success of the CD: 1998, after he had won with the album Buena Vista Social Club, the most important music award Grammy, Ry Cooder traveled to Cuba again. He planned to record a solo album with the singer Ibrahim Ferrer. Cooder brought with him a long-time friend, the German film director Wim Wenders and his film crew. The result was the highly successful documentary during the recording of the album and then during some concerts.

As one of the first films he has been completely digitally recorded; as a Digital Betacam cameras were used as a Steadicam (camera man Jörg Widmer ) and several mini - DV cameras by Wim Wenders itself

Reviews

There is a broad consensus that the film presents worth listening to music and the musicians have the world's attention, which is accrued to them deserves.

It is also undisputed that the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club on stage and in life humor and joy of life show that contagious. None of the musician can be pretend by marketing experts an image. The Shown therefore feels authentic.

Criticism, however, is sometimes the way in which the representatives of Western culture have approached the representatives of the Cuban culture. When criticisms are led by North American and European reviewers, Ry Cooder will be very exposed in the film and he behaving the Cubans against condescending. In addition, it could not be with Wim Wenders love of Cuban music far away, otherwise he would not frequently the presentation of music interrupted by cuts. It was also criticized that the film in such detail the naive emotion of the musicians is walking through the streets of New York; some critics saw it as an impermissible exposure.

Cuban reviewers expressed surprised that, given the long tradition of music of Cuba and its diverse music scene just the Son is particularly emphasized. However, concerts were the BVSC in Cuba too high praise.

Music critic Pedro de la Hoz which appears in Havana Granma stated that the film and the promotional CDs around a legend was created. In his view, it was not a question for the musicians of the BVSC to some forgotten by the Cuban public, has often been explained in connection with the film, but rather consistently about artists before the BVSC project their place in the history of Cuban music certainly had.

The lexicon of the International film ruled that the production bein think " clichés and unnecessary sentimentality ," which would increase " the impression of a listless filmed a video ".
