Buenaventura Báez

Buenaventura Báez Méndez (* July 14, 1812 in Hispaniola, † March 14, 1884 in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico) was a five-time president of the Dominican Republic.

Biography

He participated in 1844 in the successful uprising against Haiti, in consequence of the independence of the Dominican Republic was attached. In 1846 he traveled to France in order to achieve the establishment of a French protectorate over the Dominican Republic, but without success. During his first presidential term from 1849 to 1853, he tried unsuccessfully also to persuade the United States to the occupation of the Republic. From 1856 to 1858 President again, he was overthrown in a coup and went into exile in Spain. There he led a dissolute life and planned the takeover of the Dominican Republic by the Spanish crown. Although the Spanish king in 1861 showed inclined and four governors began in the Dominican Republic, he gave up the colony in 1865 and sent them again to independence.

Then Báez returned to his home, and stood on the presidential election, which he won. In May 1866 he was, however, again overthrown. During his fourth term in office from 1868 to 1874 he tried again to take over the country by the United States. After all, he brought President Ulysses S. Grant then to send warships to the Dominican Republic, and brought an annexation treaty until the U.S. Senate, which did not ratify it. Grant was then forced to withdraw warships.

From 1876 to 1878 Báez was the fifth President, but was again overthrown in a coup and went to Puerto Rico from exile, was a Spanish colony. He died there in 1884.
