Features

This species is quite large (up to 32 mm long) and built quite stable, the wingspan is 55-68 mm. The forewings are gray, silvery scaly and have at the wing tip (apex ) has a striking contrasting light brown stain on the moon spot. The thorakiale hair wearing the same color, with wings folded sees this moth a broken branch strikingly similar, most likely a birch branch. The hind wings are white beige, the head ( caput) is brown. The moon bird flies at night from May to July and often flies to light sources.

Dissemination

The Moon Bird is from the Iberian Peninsula all over Europe (including the British Isles ) spread to East Asia. In the south, its range via Turkey and the Caucasus extends to Central Asia. In the north of the site boundary runs south of the Arctic Circle. It is found in deciduous forests and parks from the plains to about 1,600 meters in height.

Development

The young caterpillars are very sociable, but later they are loners. Older caterpillars are very striking colored, black with orange-yellow transverse and yellow white vertical stripes. The head is black and wearing a yellow V. They are up to six inches long and feed on many tree and shrub species. As this moth overwinters doll in the world. The caterpillars are found from July to August and the moth from early May to July.
