Description

Appearance and leaves

In Viburnum species are shrubs or rarely small trees. There are both evergreen and deciduous species. The bark of the branches is hairy hairless or downy; the hairs ( trichomes ) may be scaly easy bündelig, star-shaped or rarely. The winter buds may have bud scales.

The mostly opposite, rarely whorled also arranged leaves are stalked. They are usually simple, rarely three or five lobes, and have a serrated or smooth blade edge. There may be small stipules.

Inflorescences and flowers

Are terminally on the branches or at the ends of short branches with one or two pairs of leaves in composite, trugdoldigen or paniculate, zymösen total inflorescences few-flowered together like Asia. The support and cover sheets are usually small and fall off early. The often fragrant, flowers are five-fold radial symmetry and generally small, but there are also ways in which the florets of the inflorescence are sterile and enlarged, sometimes a bit more also increases outwards so that they are slightly zygomorphic. In this case, the inflorescences are reminiscent of the many hydrangea species, which, however, have mostly fourfold flowers. In the garden of the form " filled snowball " ( Viburnum opulus ' roseum ') all flowers are sterile when ball -shaped buds and enlarged.

The five sepals are fused into a cylindrical tube that ends in five short calyx lobes. The calyx tube adherent to the ovary. The five mostly white, rarely pink to reddish or greenish petals are Roehrig, flat wheel-shaped, broadly bell-shaped or fused salverform. It's just a circle with five fertile stamens present. The filaments are filiform and the anthers open by a longitudinal slit. In the semi- permanent under, three combs ring ovary, but only one ovary chamber is fertile and it contains only a single ovule. The short style ends in a weakly capitate to three-lobed stigma.

Fruits

The single-seeded drupes contain a more or less flattened stone core and mostly red or blue " flesh ". The stone fruits turn red when ripe, purple to black or rarely yellow.

Terms and name origin

Many Snowball species and their hybrids are cultivated for their part, fragrant flowers that bloom in some species even in winter, as well as for their showy fruit and partly also because of the fall color of the foliage in gardens and parks. A Soviet film of 1974 with the title Kalina Krasnaya ( Калина красная ), in the German version " Red elderberry " plays with the importance of this plant in the Russian mythology. The reason may lie in the heart shape of the fruit core. The really poisonous fruits are traditionally cooked after the first frost to a bad-smelling jelly on bread or Teezugabe.

The German name snowball likely to be in use since the 17th century, as the sterile -filled snowball with ball -shaped inflorescences ( Viburnum opulus ' roseum ') first arose around 1594.

Dissemination

The genus Viburnum is mostly native to the temperate to subtropical latitudes of the northern hemisphere. In particular, East Asia, but also West Asia, North America, Central America, Europe and the Atlas Mountains are part of the distribution area. Some species are found in the Andes, the tropical latitudes. In Central Europe, only two species, the common snowball and the snowball Woolly are native.

System

The genus Viburnum in 1753, first published by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum, Volume 1, pages 267-268. Type species is Viburnum lantana L..

The genus Viburnum were formerly placed in the honeysuckle family ( Caprifoliaceae ). However, as the elder, they have some different features, such as stone fruits or lack of nectaries. Recent studies have revealed that they belong together with the genus elder to the family of musk herb plants ( Adoxaceae ).

The phylogenetic relationships within the genus, however, remain unclear. (Compare also Richard C. Winkworth and Michael J. Donoghue, 2005)
