Bulnesia arborea

Bulnesia arborea is a species of the genus within the family of Bulnesia Jochblattgewächse ( Zygophyllaceae ).

Description

Bulnesia arborea is reached ( in extreme cases up to 30 meters) is an evergreen tree, the plant height 9-12 meters. Full-grown trees are often unbranched on the lower 4.5 to 6 meters. In the tree has many branches with drooping branches that can almost reach the ground.

The constantly against arranged on the branches leaves are up to 12 centimeters long and twisted pinnate with 7-14 pairs of bright olive green leaflets.

Dissemination

The natural neotropical distribution area extends from the West Indies via Central America to northern South America. It thrives in xerophytic ecosystems.

Use

The wood of the lignum vitae is Bulnesia arborea from trees of the genus Guaiacum not dissimilar and sometimes comes under the name of Maracaibo lignum vitae in the trade. It is with a bulk density from 0.92 to 1.1 slightly lighter than genuine lignum vitae. The trading volume is, however, very small.

Botanical history

Bulnesia arborea was first described by Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin in 1763 under the name of Zygophyllum arboreum. In 1890 the species was made ​​by Adolf Engler and Karl Anton Eugen Prantl in the genus Bulnesia.
