The Federal Highway 391 (abbreviated as BAB 391 ) - Short form: Highway 391 ( Abbreviation: A 391 ) - also Braunschweig city highway or Westtangente Brunswick called - is a highway that runs in a north -south direction on the western outskirts of the city of Braunschweig along. It has a length of about ten kilometers, connects the A 39 in the south to the A 2 to the north and eventually goes north of Braunschweig in Bechtsbüttel in the highway 4 by My, Gifhorn and Uelzen.

It was originally intended primarily as a relief of Braunschweig city center and the so-called urban ring for the region's residents and Salzgitter area and the resin room should be connected to the motorway network, but served for many years for long-distance traffic and almost the entire heavy traffic from Poland and Berlin to Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart and the opposite direction. The line was used as a kind of diversion for the last time still missing section of the A 39 between Cremlingen and the cross Wolfsburg / Königslutter.

The A 391 is not conceived as a regional connection. In particular, in the southern area it is therefore expanding moderately well below the usual motorway standard and has several kilometers neither side stripes.

The motorway junction Braunschweig- West was rebuilt so that the A 39 as the main road through the triangle; before the A 39 from Salzgitter in the A 391 was about, and vice versa. Reason for the conversion is the completion of the A39 south and east of Brunswick and the resulting gap was closing the A 39 to the A 2, whereby the A 39 is more used by long-distance transport. The plan approval process for reconstruction had begun in late February 2007, the zoning decision on June 6, 2008. Construction began in November 2008 and was completed on 28 August 2012.

Earlier plans before seen, the A lead 391 on its current northern end of the B 4 on up to Gifhorn. There should exist in the form of a motorway interchange access to the A 32. The planning for this northern extension as well as for the construction of A 32 have now been abandoned.
