Burdur has approximately 70,000 inhabitants and is the county seat of a Turkish district and the capital of the province of Burdur. Burdur is located in the Mediterranean region at an altitude 940-1030 meters above sea level on the eastern shore of Burdur Gölü, one of the deepest lakes in Turkey and at the mouth of the creek Qurna.

History

In the immediate vicinity of the city you will find evidence early settlements, dating back to the period around 6500 BC. The name of the town goes back to the Latin Praetoria and was first detected in 1483.

In the 19th century capital of a sanjak of Burdur Konya was. In a major fire in 1884 about 150 houses were destroyed. When a massive earthquake on October 3, 1914 estimated that more than 1,500 people lost their lives. Two thirds of the houses were destroyed. From 1919 to 1921 Burdur was under Italian occupation. In 1923 there was another major fire in trade district in which 250 shops were destroyed.

After the founding of the Republic of Burdur capital of the newly formed province of the same name was. According to the first census Burdur then had 12,848 inhabitants. 1936 Burdur was connected to the railway network. By 1955, the population stagnated development. In 1955, a sugar factory began its production. This resulted in a rapid population growth.
