The station Burggasse City Hall is a built in deep level station of the Vienna U -Bahn line U6 on the border between the 7th and the 15th district of Vienna. It is named since 1898 the castle alley, a major axis of the 7th district, which extends between belt and two- line and was named in 1862 after their alignment to the Imperial Palace, on the other hand, in the 15th district located, according to plans by Roland Rainer Built 1953-1958 City Hall.
The station was how the whole belt line, opened in 1898 as part of the architecturally designed by Otto Wagner Stadtbahn under the name " Castle Street ". Since 1925, consists of electrical apparatus under an overhead line ( line signals G, GD, DG). Until 1989 the station was part of the waistline. In 1989, the start of operations of today's U6; to the direction of travel of the two tracks has been replaced. Reason for this is that the former rail station is a listed building since December 1, 1999. Characteristic of the platform area are roughly hewn stone blocks, with which the walls are covered.
The historic northern exit of the station by means of fixed staircase leads into a reception building, as can be seen in a similar form in some other former rail stations. On the bridge over the assets of the U6 is a stop on the bus line 48A in the direction of travel is from the Baumgartnerhöhe Dr.- Karl- Renner-Ring.
The built after 1960, starting at the southern end of the platforms leads by means of fixed stairs and a lift by a result of the construction of the Main Library in the 2000s (begun 1999/2000, opening 7 April 2003) redesigned station building on the Urban- Loritz Square. Here it is possible to switch to the tram lines 6, 9, 18 and 49. The lines 6 and 18 have their north western terminus here.
