History

The castle was built in 1124-1146 by the Bamberg Prince- Bishops. 1160 called Emperor Frederick I., the castle Grivena as Bamberger possession from time immemorial. To 1425 belonged to the castle court rights. 1292 occupied Ulrich von Heunburg during an uprising against the son of King Rudolf, Duke Albrecht I, the fortress. 1293 Ulrich had to leave the castle again. 1759 ended the Bamberg rule. The castle was the Carinthian government incorporated. There were then several owners after the other, namely, Maria Theresa, then the counts Egger and finally the Baron of Hell Village.

In the 16th century a major reconstruction of the castle took place. The surface area was about 4000 square meters. 1659 destroyed a lightning strike one of the towers. 1768, the last service was held in the castle and in 1840 the ailing roofs were torn. In 2000 began the restoration of the ruin. A hiking trail now leads the castle hill to the castle steps.

Others

Inside the 130 -meter high castle hill is the Griffener stalactite cave. The mountain consists of yellowish limestone.
