The interwar period was like throughout Southern Carinthia - in addition to the general social tensions and social disintegration - especially characterized by the ethnic intolerance exclusivist territorial claims history. " Running a label market in Griffen has survived since 1592 without the need for yet a ceremony or confirmation is detectable. Due to the similarity with the coat of Villach a guess to the emergence of the subject asks that the Bamberg bishops strove a city founded after the establishment of the pin handles in the 13th century; the existing from 1236 Premonstratensian led a gryphon coat of arms. The gripping claw can also be interpreted as an allusion to the place name ( gripping means in Middle High German Grife ), even if the actual origin of the name has other roots, and goes back to a pre-Slavic term for a river mouth.

The coat of arms of the municipality was confirmed on 20 November 1969, simultaneously awarded a banner that shows the colors black -yellow-red with integrated crest.
