High Castle ruins

The ruins High Castle at Pusarnitz lies west of Spittal an der Drau.

The small, already greatly decayed High Castle is situated on an elongated rocky ridge north of Lurnfeld. The castle covers a 80 m long and 12 m wide area with only a grave -like depression in the middle. The few extant architectural remains date back to the 12th century. The installation of the High Castle suggests a medieval castle section.

The former chapel was extended in 1707 to the pilgrimage church of Maria in the High Castle and has remained untouched.

History

The castle was first mentioned in 1142 as castrum Hohenburc ancestral seat of the ancient family of the Counts of Lurn who administered the Lurngau. With the death of Bishop Altmann of Trent in 1149, the castle passed into Salzburg possession. The Archbishop of Salzburg in 1311 enfeoffed the counts of Ortenbourg who sought a long time for this property, with a part of the High Castle, which was called Gurkenhous and the part of a " planchen zaigent hinumb the cistern and the poumgarten before the hous ." The High castle lost its importance, as her successor, castle Feldberg became the administrative center of Salzburg.

Perhaps the chief castle was at conflict with the Counts of Gorizia Emperor Frederick III. destroyed.
