Castle ruins Kollmitz

The ruins Kollmitz is east of the town Raab an der Thaya on a steeply sloping rock spur, which is encircled by the River Thaya in further loop. It is located in the cadastral Kollmitzdörfl the community Raab an der Thaya.

The cyclopean walls with two round towers at the corners are the remains of one of the largest, once sprawling, medieval, important castles in Lower Austria. The semi-circular gate tower with pointed arch, the dungeon, the dungeon and the remains of a two-storey residential building and various other components are obtained. In the north- west rises the Built around 1450 against George of Podiebrad, about 110 meters long so-called Bohemian wall that is in front of the castle at a distance of about 300 meters.

History

The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century. In the 14th century there was a district court, the gallows stood at Ludweis. The last Kollmitzer Hofkirchen died in 1611 in exile in Prague, where he was expelled because of his Protestant faith. Kollmitz was around 300 years closely associated with Drösiedl. From 1570 Drösiedl was converted into a Renaissance castle and the old castle Kollmitz would have been possibly even leave, if not after the expulsion Hofkirchens other owners had lived there.

The castle was from 1616 the property of Schütter, then the thrust Hardt, since 1693 the pin Pernegg, and 1708 the castle came finally into the possession of Franz Anton von Quarient and Raal (sometimes Raall ), owner of the rule Raab, however, they expire allowed. The castle had a predecessor on the other side of the valley west of Kollmitzgraben, their location is hardly recognizable. Probably wore this castle that was inhabited only about 150 years, the name Hauenstein. Only with the construction of Kollmitz 400 m east of this ancient castle was abandoned. All known mentions of Chalmunze etc. before 1250 refer to the Kollmitzberg in Amstetten. A dendrochronological investigation revealed that in 1319 the donjon of the new castle was completed Kollmitz.

A good view of the castle offers the valley road that runs along the Thaya.

Since 1974, the " Association for the Preservation of the castle ruins Kollmitz " around the plant care. In summer, a snack station is operated there.
