Burgruine Wartenfels

Castle ruins Wait Rock, from West Ridge of Schober

The ruins Wait rock is the ruins of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Thalgau in Salzburg, Austria. It is located about 20 kilometers east of Salzburg on a small ledge at the foot of Schober (1020 m above sea level. A. ).

History

The Wait rock castle was built by Conrad of stone churches (presumably a member of the Tanner ) built to Kalham 1259 together with his son Conrad, the latter then called Konrad von Wait rock. The castle appears from 1267 to 1301 and documents from another Konrad von Kalham with the associated goods at the Salzburg Archbishop Konrad sold IV ( daz purchstal ze Wartenuels ), but it was as a fief back. After the extinction of Kalhamer the Archbishop straightened Wait a rock a Pfleggericht, which existed until 1564. During the Peasants' War of 1525/26 the castle was burned down and no longer fully established despite compensation by the court people. 1552 interior work was still billed. 1557 the castle roof was re-covered. Then the Pfleggericht moved into a house in the center of Thalgau. For a time, the castle was still inhabited by hunters and gamekeepers, but was increasingly to decay and lapsed except for a few remnants of the outer brickwork.

1541/42 Paracelsus has often stopped at the castle and he should have maintained a close relationship with the wife of the castle steward.

At the castle belonged to a " yard " or Maierhof. This is the Good " In Prichsen " ( Thalgau Egg # 3 ). Its first owner is a Chunradus, on the Republic in 1336 Hofurbar of the diocese. The farm was renewed in 1578. Today the ruins Wait rock belongs to the farm.

Wait rock castle ruins today

The castle has a triangular plan, the wall to the little sheltered eastern side has a thickness of two meters. In the eastern part of the castle gate must have stood in the lower courtyard, the foundations of a farm building can be seen. From here a narrow and secured by ramparts access area pulls up to the main castle. In the late Middle Ages a small, walk- cultivation was carried out before the main castle, which had its own kennel. Where access to the stronghold was (possibly protected by a drawbridge ) is no longer detectable. Significant remnants of walls have been preserved on the wide western wall with wall teeth and the intimation of three windows. From the formerly existing chapel nothing remains.

For earlier appearance of the castle only can say little more, since the existing windows are now created only in the course of the renovation. Because of the danger that existed for visitors to the old building, the ruins were restored in 1981, whereby to historical correctness put too much value.
