The butter carving is an artistic activity, in which frozen butter is used.

Dissemination

Butter carving is widespread including in Tibet, Qinghai Province, and in India among Tibetans, where mostly worked with yak butter.

Kumbum Monastery

The Butterschnitzerei of Kumbum Monastery or Tar or Ta'ersi Monastery (Ch: Ta'ersi suyouhua塔尔寺 酥油花) in a circle Huangzhong湟 中 县the Chinese province of Qinghai is on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China ( 347 VII- 48).

In the west

The Butterschnitzerei also found in the West imitation, mostly for decorative purposes as table decorations on dining tables.

USA

In Iowa, USA, ( an exhibition for agricultural products ) take life-size butter sculptures at the Iowa State Fair a special role. The traditional Butterkuh (English Butter Cow) is since 1911 every year by a specially trained traditional sculptor (English butter sculptor; currently the fourth since 1911) created new and for some years Sir personalities are represented as butter sculptures in Iowa.
