Buzzy Linhart

Buzzy Linhart ( born March 3, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and vibraphonist.

Life

At the age of 7 years Linhart began to be interested in music and theater and first played percussion in the school orchestra. At age 10 he moved to the vibraphone and the age of 14 he attended the Cleveland Music School, where he led several school bands. From 1961 he attended the U.S. Navy School of Music in 1962 and went to Florida, where he met the singer, guitarist and songwriter Fred Neil and performed with this in clubs. In 1963 he was, along with Neil, Greenwich Village, New York, and became friends in the local folk scene with John Sebastian, who later became a founding member of The Lovin ' Spoonful at. Neil was at this time a sort of emcee in the Folk Club Cafe Wha? , Where he introduced new folk singer to the audience, including Bob Dylan and Buzzy Linhart.

The American folk scene back then was enthusiastic about Indian music, especially Ravi Shankar and his virtuosity on the sitar. Inspired by this played Neil, Linhart, the guitarist and singer Tim Hardin and other musicians long jam sessions in clubs like the Night Owl Cafe and the Cafe au Go Go with improvisations in a combination of folk and Indian ragas. The later raga rock fusion should be called the forerunner of psychedelic music.

In 1966 Linhart, along with Serge cats, Steve Denaut and Max Ochs, the quartet Seventh Sons, which began a raga -rock LP, however, soon broke up again. Shortly after, the band leader Mitch Ryder Linhart committed for a tour of the USA, Germany and the UK. During another visit to London in 1968, he was able to conclude with Phillips Records a record deal and record his first album buzzy. With the song Sing Joy contained on a typical Linhart raga folk adaptation with the accompanying instruments, guitar, sitar, tabla and mellotron is documented for the first time.

After his return to New York in 1969, he founded with Doug Rodriguez on lead guitar, John Siomos on drums and Douglas Rausch on bass Buzzy Linhart the Quartet, which he later renamed Music. A well -titled LP was released in 1970, the band broke up shortly after the release but on. In the same year he participated in the recordings of their first studio album by John Sebastian.

As a session musician on the vibraphone, he also has performed on albums by Richie Havens, David Crosby, Mama Cass, Carly Simon, Buffy Sainte- Marie, Cat Mother & All Night News Boys and Jimi Hendrix ( Cry of Love ).

1971 Linhart moved in songwriting circles and learned some of the later successful musicians know. For Carly Simon wrote the raga -rock song The Love's Still Growing, for Bette Midler his most famous song Friends, which was released on their first album The Divine Miss M., which reached # 6 on the Billboard charts again and her signature song was.

In the same year Linhart took his third album, The Time to Live Is Now with Midler's friend Luther Rix on drums and Bill Takas on bass. His fourth, Buzzy ( The Black Album ), which was mixed by Todd Rundgren, released in 1972. Also in 1972 he wrote songs for a musical that allegedly obscene with time pending court proceedings in London against authors and publishers of the underground magazine OZ because content employed. Even John Lennon and Yoko Ono had participated in protests against this method. The musical was performed several times on Broadway, but then dropped off because of Linhart's provocative lyrics.

Linhart's last album with a major record label was Pussycats Can Go Far, published in 1974. Two years later, he wrote the songs for the film Rush It! director Gary Youngman, Judy Kahan and Tom Berenger in the lead roles. He had supporting roles in the films The Groove Tube 1974 Modern Problems 1981 ( with Chevy Chase ), and 1976 in the comedy series by Bill Cosby.

From 1983 to 1994 he hosted radio programs. He now lives (2009) in Berkeley, denies live performances and has written and recorded, many of which have remained unpublished numerous songs. In 2008, his first album was released on CD again.
