By-product
Addition product is called traditionally all the way and often arises in the production of unwanted (major ) product.
-Products are produced in many areas of human activity - not only in the industry. Even natural activities bring byproducts - not least the so-called " weeds " in the garden or in agriculture.
Common industrial by- products are, for example, the carbon dioxide in the energy sector and in almost all forms of combustion, or various slag - as in many branches of the metal industry and blast furnaces. In the chemical industry there is no shortage of by-products - and not all of them are good to use as molasses or plaster in the food industry.
Examples
Main product of beet sugar production is sugar. By-products are molasses, carbonated lime and sugar beet pulp. The main product in the production of cane sugar is glucose. By-products are molasses and bagasse.
Main product in the production of ethanol is alcohol. By-product is DDGS.
Main product at Thomas process is steel. By-product is the Thomas flour.
Joint production
Is the production of goods without the simultaneous seizures of another ( recyclable ) material possible, it is called a joint production.
Use of by-products
Such byproducts are often no longer - as usually sooner - landfilled or incinerated, but a recycling fed. In earlier times it happened sometimes that by-products so became more important that the relationship with the main product was reversed:
- Coke in the production of " town gas " ( destructive distillation of coal )
- Tar in the extraction of petroleum (see also Teerschiefer )
- Ammonia as a by-product of gas production
- Press cake, such as rapeseed cake than quantitatively predominant by-product of vegetable oil production, and
- Recently about in the sawdust - which are molded briquettes as a popular finishing for heating purposes.
