Bylakuppe ( Kannada: ಬೈಲಕುಪ್ಪೆ Bailakuppe ) is a town in Mysore district of the South Indian state of Karnataka. In Bylakuppe, the two mutually adjacent Tibetan refugee settlements " Lugsum Samdupling " (founded in 1960) and " Dickyi Larsoe " (founded in 1969). The nearest town is Kushalnagar in Kodagu district.

Population

The refugee population includes about 10,000 Tibetan exiles. The settlements were built on land that the Indian government had provided for the resettlement of Tibetan refugees available that came in the 1950s and 1960s to India. They consist of a series of closely spaced small camps / agricultural settlements and have a number of monasteries and temples of all the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Your most important is the great Sera Monastic University, as well as the smaller Tashilhunpo Monastery (both in the Gelugpa tradition ) and the Namdroling monastery ( in the Nyingma tradition).
