C166 family

C166 is a 16 -bit microcontroller architecture, the semiconductor division of Siemens (which now operates under the name Infineon) in collaboration with STMicroelectronics in 1993. It is based on the RISC concept, but has some microcontroller typical extensions, such example bit-addressable memory and optimized for low latency interrupt system. When introducing this architecture, the focus was on providing the most efficient replacement for the somewhat dated architecture of the 8051 controller manufactured by Intel and to make the jump from 8 to 16 bit register width.

There are now no active (that is still produced ) more members of this family, as it was now by the families C167, XC167 and XE166 replaced, but now the C166 architecture forms the basis of the industrially important 16- bit controller family.
