Cabanas de Viriato is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit Carregal do Sal 1530 inhabitants live in her (as at 30 June 2011). Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) was born and raised here, before he saved as consul in Bordeaux tens of thousands from the Holocaust.

Geography

Cabanas de Viriato is located in the mountainous hinterland Central Portugal, between the Serra do Caramulo and the Serra da Estrela. It is about ten kilometers from the south-west to county town Carregal do Sal and about 30 kilometers from the northern district capital of Viseu.

History

Finds of graves occupy a human settlement in the municipality to the 4th millennium BC.

On the initiative of, inter alia, by César de Sousa Mendes, Aristides de Sousa twin brother of Mendes and ministers under the Salazar regime, was the place of the (German: huts) just before Cabanas was the official name suffix de Viriato (Eng.: the Viriathus ). He should remember Viriathus ( 180-139 BC), the successful leader of the resistance of the Lusitanians against the Roman invaders, who may have been born here and lived here.

Traffic

The place is situated on the A35 and is a stop on the Linha da Beira Alta, whose station is located just outside the town.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

In addition to two churches and a further manor house, is the Casa do Passal a mansion from the 19th century in the village conservation area. This is now also known as Casa do Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes (English: House of Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes ) is known, and is the goal of various initiatives to further appreciation of the building and the associated memory of its most famous residents.

The municipality is located to the Monumento de Megalítico Cabanas de Viriato (German: Megalithic monument of Cabanas de Viriato ) an archaeological site in which, inter alia, the remains of dolmens and a hillside grave were found.

Nationally known are also the traditional carnival celebrations in Cabanas, annually in February.

The 1872 musical association Sociedade Filarmónica de Cabanas de Viriato is a major cultural motor of the community, particularly through its music school, his theater group, its choir, its groups for folk dance and modern dance. In addition, sports clubs, and a hunters and anglers association in place are active as a volunteer fire department.
