Cable & Wireless Worldwide

The Cable & Wireless plc is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world.

It was founded around 1860 by John Pender. In the mid-1980s, Cable & Wireless introduced the first company in England an alternative to British Telecom in the phone dar. Later, the offer was extended to cable television. Today Cable & Wireless one of the largest Internet service provider in the world and provides with companies such as Level 3, AT & T and the other a considerable part of the Internet backbone.

Cable & Wireless sold in 2000, the subsidiary Telecom Hong Kong to the Chinese company PCCW.

On April 23, 2012, the British mobile phone company Vodafone reached an agreement with Cable & Wireless about a takeover by Vodafone for 1.04 billion pounds ( the equivalent of about 1.29 billion euros ). On 19 June 2012, the Cable & Wireless shareholders approved the takeover.
