CAC CA-15

The Commonwealth Kangaroo ( designation: CA -15) was a prototype for an Australian fighter.

History

The development of the Kangaroo began in 1943 due to a requirement of the RAAF for a new high-performance fighter. It was guided by the American North American P- 51st

It was originally planned as an engine air-cooled Pratt & Whitney R -2800 radial engine, but in early 1945, the project has been converted to the water-cooled V- 12 engine Rolls- Royce Griffon after delivery problems for the R -2800 loomed.

In the first flight of the prototype ( A61- 1001) showed good flight performance, however difficult the high torque start. Because of a hydraulic failure, the Kangaroo was heavily damaged during the landing on 10 December 1946. It was not until the beginning of 1948 it was repaired and further test flights carried out. On May 25, 1948 she reached a nosedive a speed of about 803 km / h

In 1950, the project was finally stopped because the kangaroo was seen as outdated and the Gloster Meteor and de Havilland Vampire had taken their place.
