Cadell ap Gruffydd

Cadell ap Gruffydd († 1175 in Strata Florida Abbey ) was a prince of the Welsh principality of Deheubarth.

1150 he sat Carmarthen Castle repaired, then he attacked and conquered the Lordship of Kidwelly Carmarthenshire south of the River Aeron. 1151 he conquered the rest of the country, except for Hywels ap Owains castle in Llanrhystud. In 1151 he was severely wounded while hunting from a Anglo-Norman Streift Rupp from Tenby and left for dead. He survived, but he was no more than to wage war invalids in a position as ruler of the country. 1153 or 1156 it should be broken on a pilgrimage to Rome and left his country until his return to his brothers Maredudd and Rhys. After his return to Deheubarth he retired as a monk in the Strata Florida Abbey, where he died in 1175, and was buried.

His success as a warlord laid the foundations for the resurgence of Deheubarth under his half-brother Rhys, later Lord Rhys.
