Caecilius of Elvira

Caecilius of Illiberis was one of seven bishops who were sent, according to the tradition of the Apostles Peter and Paul to Spain.

The tradition of these " seven apostolic men " ( " siete Varones apostólicos " ) lists, in addition Caecilius as Bishop of Illiberis (now Granada): Torquatus of Acci (now Cadiz ), Ctesiphon of Vergium (now Berja ), Secundus of Abula (now Abla ), Indaletius of Urci (today Almeria), Hesychius of Carteia (now Cazorla ) and Euphrasius of Illiturgum (now Andújar ). These names are taken from the Martyrology of Lyon in the year 806, which in turn is based on a source from the 5th century. Manuscripts from the 10th century, according to the seven bishops went to Cadiz on land where they pursued by the local population, but were saved miraculously. Pope John Paul II commemorated during his visit Spain in 1982 of the seven bishops as missionaries in the country.
