Cesium oxide is a chemical compound of cesium and one of the oxides. It is an orange solid.

Production and representation

Cesium oxide can not gain directly from the elements, since this Caesiumhyperoxid arises. Instead Caesiumperoxid or cesium with elemental cesium can be implemented. The reaction of cesium with cesium oxide and nitrogen to Caesiumazid is possible.

Properties

Cesium oxide is an orange to red solid. When heated, color deepening occurs to almost black. In air, it melts away gradually under discoloration. It crystallizes in contrast to the other alkali metal oxides is not in an anti - fluorite, but in a hexagonal anti- cadmium chloride structure having the space group R 3 ¯ m (a = 4.256 Å, c = 18.99 Å).

The standard enthalpy of formation of cesium oxide is ΔHf0 = -346 kJ / mol.

Use

Cesium oxide is a co-catalyst of vanadium -titania catalyst to be used for gas phase oxidations. These can be prepared from aromatic hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid anhydrides.

Photocathodes can be prepared from cesium oxide which is mixed with small silver particles.
