The University of Cairo and Cairo University (Arabic: جامعة القاهرة ) with 200,000 students and 18,000 academic staff according to the Al -Azhar University, the second largest university in Africa and one of the largest in the world. The University main campus is located in Giza, near the Nile and in the immediate vicinity of the Giza Zoo.

It was founded in 1908 as a private university in 1925 and nationalized as the first university in Egypt. Later their bodies such as the engineering school founded in 1821 Mohandes khana / مهندسخانة were annexed. Teaching and administration are basically in Arabic ( Modern Standard Arabic or Egyptian), some events (eg in political science ) will be held in English or French.

The campus of the university is in principle only members of the University - ie primarily faculty and students - accessible. The inputs are therefore usually controlled and dismissed for example tourists.

On 4 June 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama held - in the presence of, among others, by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton - in the main building of the Cairo University, his much acclaimed speech to the Muslim world. In advance had been announced some time ago that Obama, who had taken office in January of this year, wanted to make a speech in an Arab capital; the choice of the capital but had been initially kept secret. At the speech only a select audience was allowed.
