Caisa (instrument)

The caisa is a convex steel pan, which is played with the hands or with mallets. It is produced in Dortmund by Bill Brown.

The name goes back to the caisa Begeisterungsruf " CAISO " who is called Carnival time in Trinidad when a Calypso is particularly well done and has also become synonymous with the Calypso.

Description

In the upwardly curved upper part of caisa 9 to 12 sound fields by hand are hammered. It consists of sheet steel, has a diameter of 58-61 cm, weighs 4 lbs and is highly depending on the mood 13-20 cm.

The base is a metal base plate which is elastically connected to the upper part by means of ropes. It has a diameter of 45 cm and weighs 2 kg. In the center of the bottom plate is a 10 mm thread into which a foot can be screwed into wood. Three other holes in the bottom plate serve the caisa aufzuststellen on a stand. The bottom plate can also be made of wood.

With screwed-on foot from the side of the instrument has seen the shape of a mushroom.

Moods

The majority of the sentiments offered the caisa is pentatonic. The sound field in the middle ( or the one in the middle) is by far the deepest tone.

Play

The instrument can be played either on your lap with his foot between the legs or placed on the wooden walk or stand. The caisa can be played on the one hand similar to the slope with hands. On the other hand, it can be played with mallets. Here, the sound is rich in overtones and flash, similar to the conventional steel pans.
