Bears the name of the castle thanks to the noble family Zrinski, whose members possessed some 150 years. Also owners of the castle were the Dukes of Lacković, Counts of Celje, Counts of Ernušt, Earl of Festetic and the counts of Althan.

Čakovec was in the 16th and 17th centuries within the historical Military Frontier one of the main points of defense against the invading Ottomans. During this time they built the castle into a modern fortress with surrounding moat and bastions. In later years the castle has been rebuilt several times.

In the 17th century, the Bibliotheca Zriniana, the famous collection of books of the Croatian ban Nicholas Zrinski, was housed in the castle.

Today it serves as a tourist attraction. The Museum of Međimurje, which is located in the palace of the plant, is valuable repository of 17,000 exhibits. The castle is surrounded by the Zrinski park with his sculptures, monuments and memorials.
