Calcium silicate is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of calcium compounds and silicates.

Occurrence

Calcium occurs naturally as the mineral wollastonite.

Production and representation

Calcium silicate can be obtained by the reaction of calcium oxide ( CaO, quicklime ) and silicon dioxide ( SiO2, silica, or silica gel):

Properties

Calcium silicate is a white odorless solid that is practically insoluble in water.

Use

Calcium silicate is used in the food industry as a releasing agent or as a carrier ( for colors, and emulsifiers ). It is in the EU as a food additive under the number E 552 authorized with maximum quantity restrictions of 10 grams per kilogram for certain foods in spice and food supplements even without maximum limit ( quantum satis ).

The mineral wollastonite has been variously used in the ceramic industry and as a filler for polymers.

Calcium silicate boards are used in structural fire protection for walls, ceilings and linings.
