History

Attractions

On the island there are

  • An old Norman chapel dating from the 12th century,
  • A Ogamstein from the 6th century is of great interest to archaeologists because it dates back to the Dark Ages. The " Caldey Stone " carries an incised cross and both Ogam and a Latin inscription. The Ogamtext seems to say that " magl Dubr 'or ' Prince Dyfrig ' which is presumed to be St. Dyfrig, the Bishop of Glywysing in Gwent, got donations for the island in the 6th century. The Latin inscription may be a later date. It reads: "And I have this stone marked with the sign of the cross I ask all who come to this place to pray for the soul Cadwgan 's. ". A Cadwgan ap Bleddyn (1051-1111) was Prince of Powys in eastern Wales.
  • The 1829 finished lighthouse ( Caldey Lighthouse ).
  • In the southwest is a hill grave.
