Caleb (given name)
Caleb is a male first name.
Origin and Meaning
The name is of Hebrew origin. The Hebrew letters כלב is identical to the letters of the word celev in the meaning " dog ". So is often assumed that this was the meaning of the name. Another possibility is the meaning " faithful, full of devotion, of / with all my heart, brave ". Caleb is a compound word from Col ( כל, Caf Lamed ) = " all " or " whole"; Lev ( לב, Lamed Bet ) = " heart ", literally so " wholeheartedly ", possibly a reference to the Biblical Caleb.
Dissemination
In America the name was introduced by English Puritans. Among Jews, the name is not in use.
