Caliciviridae

The Caliciviridae ( calicivirus ) family currently includes four species of non-enveloped viruses with a single-stranded, linear RNA with positive polarity. Caliciviridae are the pathogens of various diseases in humans and animals, including rabbits, hares, pigs, cats, mice, cattle, whales, pinnipeds (seals ) and reptiles. With the exception of the species of the genus vesivirus show the respective calicivirus a narrow host range and can be transferred only with difficulty from a host species to another.

Morphology

The spherical virus particles Caliciviridae appear in negative staining TEM in about 27 to 40 nm in diameter large ( pictured right with 50 - nm - mark), 35-40 nm in Kryoelektronenmikroskop When imaging in the TEM the caliciviruses show a small, cup-shaped indentation, from which they got their name (Latin calix: cup, cup ). The particles are non-enveloped capsid, which are composed of 90 dimers of the main structural protein. They show an icosahedral T = 3 symmetry.
