Callambulyx

Callambulyx tatarinovii

Callambulyx is a genus of the family of the butterfly hawkmoth ( Sphingidae ) within the subfamily Smerinthinae.

Features

Most species of the genus can be recognized by their return formed the eye spot on Analwinkel of the hind wings. They also have green mottled forewings, which are more or less in the males sickle-shaped. The hind wings are crimson, thorax and abdomen are green. Both a retinaculum and a frenulum are formed. The proboscis is short and weak and can not be used for food consumption. The Pilifer is slightly enlarged and bears bristles. The back formed labial palps are slender. They are larger in the males than in the females, not prominent and not applied to the head. The antennae of the males are flattened ventrally and wear long setae. The last segment is long and filiform. The abdomen carries both narrow dorsal spine- shaped, and broad scales. The rails ( tibiae ) are not spined. They are longer than the respective first Tarsenglied. The spurs of the front rails are half the length of the rails. The middle and rear rails are very short. The last spur of the rear rail is half as long as the rail width. Pulvillus and paronychium are formed, the latter has on both sides of two praise.

The eggs are pale green and ovate. They resemble those of the genus Smerinthus very.

The caterpillars look just as those of the genus Smerinthus similar, but have larger tubercles on the Nachschieber. The Analhorn is erect, slightly curved and granulated.

The doll in turn looks similar to those of the genus Smerinthus. The cremaster is extended and has either a spike pair at the top or some thorns on the sides.

Way of life

The food plants of the caterpillars are largely unknown. Only from Callambulyx tatarinovii is known to feed on elm family ( Ulmaceae ).

Occurrence and systematics

The distribution area covers the eastern Palearctic and the Orient. One way Callambulyx tatarinovii has recently expanded their range and direction of the Western Palearctic near the Kazakh- Chinese border. After Kitching & Cadiou (2000 ), the following seven species are known:

  • Callambulyx amanda Rothschild & Jordan, 1903
  • Callambulyx junonia ( Butler, 1881)
  • Callambulyx kitchingi Cadiou, 1996
  • Callambulyx Poecilus ( Rothschild, 1898)
  • Callambulyx rubricosa (Walker, 1856
  • Callambulyx schintlmeisteri Brechlin, 1997)
  • Callambulyx tatarinovii ( Bremer & Grey, 1853)
