Evening Pfauenauge ( Smerinthus ocellatus )

Smerinthus is a genus within the family of butterfly moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

Most species of the genus have a blue and black colored eye spot on Analwinkel of the hind wings. The toothed on the outer edge front wings have brown or gray marbled pattern. The thorax has a dark brown band on the back. The proboscis is regressed. The abdomen bears on the back instead of wide scales thorn -shaped. The tibiae are unbedornt, only at Smerinthus kindermannii, Smerinthus minor and Smerinthus ocellatus find an apical spine on the front legs. The oval eggs are pale green to yellow and sometimes have on one side a red tone.

The caterpillars are green and have a rough, fine gepustelte body surface. Laterally they wear yellow or white diagonal stripes. Her head is triangular, the Analhorn is straight, erect and granular. They are very similar to the larvae of the genus Marumba.

The dolls are dark shiny. They also see that the genus Marumba very similar, but they lack the increases on the front. The probe sheath is broad in male dolls, the cremaster is curved at the tip upwards us has a small, paired top and sides more tips.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on shrubs and trees from the families of the willow family ( Salicaceae ) and rose family ( Rosaceae ).
