Marumba

Marumba dyras

Marumba is a genus within the family of butterfly moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The forewings of the moths are beige, brown or gray, wear transverse lines and have a serrated outer edge. The tip of the hind wing is rounded. The proboscis is reduced to two separate lobes and has no function. The antennae of the males have elongated bristles, the last sensor segment is short. The abdomen has no broad scales on the back, but is heavily covered with fine spines. The tibiae are spiny, but lacking the hind legs, the central pair of spurs. The tarsi are strong, on the bottom form spines more or less comb-like series. The proportional length of the wires D2 and D3 of the hind wings is variable, but D2 is never twice as long as D3, sometimes even shorter than D3.

The eggs are proportional to the size of the moths very large, oval and have a pale weißlichgrüne coloring, sometimes with brownish spots.

The caterpillars are green and have a rough, fine gepustelte body surface. Laterally, the animals carry the yellow and white diagonal stripes, giving them resemblance to caterpillars of the genus Smerinthus. The Analhorn is straight or slightly curved and has a granular structure. Young caterpillars have a pronounced hump behind the head.

The dolls are wrinkled, shiny, and have a strong resemblance to the genus Smerinthus dolls, but have the front two striking increases. The proboscis is not recognizable. The cremaster is short and wide and usually has two peaks.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on shrubs and trees from the families of the walnut family ( Juglandaceae ), rose family ( Rosaceae ), laurel (Lauraceae ) (Malvaceae ) and Fagaceae ( Fagaceae ).
