Calophyllum inophyllum
Calophyllum inophyllum is a tree species of the genus Calophyllum, of the family Clusiaceae. Calophyllum inophyllum is a hardwood tree whose wood was traded as Indian mahogany or rosewood. The resin was under the name Takamahak commercially.
Description
The tree is about 12 m high and has a cantilevered and low branched habit. The foliage is dense, glossy and dark green and dull on the outer end. The approximately 2 centimeters wide, white flowers smell strongly, the fruits are 3-4 inches long and yellowish brown.
Dissemination
Calophyllum inophyllum is native from East Africa to Malaysia's and Northern Australia. It is relatively tolerant of salt, which is why it can be found on coasts, where it is often planted on beaches as coastal protection and shade.
