Calvin T. Durgin

Calvin Thornton Durgin ( born January 7, 1893 in Palmyra, New Jersey, † March 25, 1965 in New York City, New York ) was an admiral of the United States Navy during World War II.

Life

Calvin T. Durgin was born on January 7, 1893 in Palmyra, New Jersey, the son of Francis and Sarah Durgin Boal. After visiting the school in his birthplace, he was inducted into the United States Naval Academy in 1912. After the completion of the Naval Academy in 1916, he married Myrtle W. Fest, with whom he later had three children. As a young ensign Durgin served on the battleship USS Illinois.

After the end of Operation Torch, he was one of a commission that investigated the potential applications of escort aircraft carriers. His first major command after promotion to Rear Admiral in February 1943 was the Task Group 27.7 during Operation Dragoon in August 1944. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Pacific, where he served as commander of Task Group 77.4 aboard the USS Makin Iceland ( CVE- 93) in January 1945, was responsible for securing the landing in Lingayen Gulf. As a Task Group Commander, he also participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the end of the war he was employed in several country commands, from 1 May 1949 the rank of Vice Admiral. The official transport this rank was but only with his retirement from active service on 1 September 1951. Calvin T. Durgan died on March 25, 1965 during a visit to the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
