Calycobathra

Calycobathra is a genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The head of the moth is scaly smooth. The sensors are 3/4 as long as the fore wings and scaly at the base. The sensor base member ( scape ) is very broad and flattened, especially at the base. The labial palps are bent cylindrical and upward. The front wings are broadly lanceolate and have a dark ocher or brownish staining. The wings drawing is very indistinct. The hind wings are lanceolate and half as wide as the front wings.

In the male the uncus is short, strong and hook-shaped. The Tegumen is short and band-shaped. The Valven are long and slender. They are finger-shaped and have on the distal inner surface of the bristles. Ventral some long bristles are attached. The Vinculum is large and has two inside wide praise. The aedeagus is very short and slender, and often provided with teeth or spines.

In females, the apophyses are roughly equal in length. At the rear edge of the sixth sternite is a large fold covering the ostium. The seventh sternite is short and has a wide slot-like bulge. The ostium is located on a protruding ring on the front edge of the seventh sternite between large and often complex side shields with net-like structures and thorns. The ductus bursae runs in a few turns and is provided with an elongate sclerotized band. The antrum is often sclerotized and covered inside with dense hairs. The corpus bursae is roundish and occasionally provided with comb-shaped structures. There are two small spine or horn-shaped signals present.

Dissemination

The representatives of the genus in North Africa, the Near and Middle East, widespread in the Caucasus, Central Asia and eastwards to Mongolia.

Biology

Biology is known only in a few species. The caterpillars live in the shoots and fruits of Calligonum species.

System

The type species of the genus is Calycobathra acarpa Meyrick, 1891. In Europe, the genus with two species Calycobathra calligoni and Calycobathra variapenella represented.
