Cambambe

Province

Cambambe is a circle ( Municipio ) in the Angolan province Cuanza Norte. The county has an area of 5212 km ² with a population of around 92,000 (as of 2006 ), which gives a population density of 17,64 inhabitants per km ². In the north it is bounded by the circles of Dande and Pango Aluquém, east of Golungo Alto, Cazengo and Cacuso, in the south of Libolo and Quiçama, and to the west of iColo e Bengo. It consists of four municipalities (Portuguese Comunas, German municipalities).

The capital is Cambambes Dondo.

The time in force is the West African Time (UTC 1 h). It corresponds to the Central European Time.

In Cambambe circle is the Cambambe Dam, which impounds the Cuanza to generate electricity.

History

The area was colonized in 1604 by the Portuguese. After 1771 the Portuguese Francisco Coutinho Inocêncio in Nova Oeira ( now the town Massangano ) opened a foundry that applies here as the first metal factory in Africa, began an industrial development in the highly agricultural area. The place Dondo 1857 seat of a separate circuit ( concelho ) and grew particularly due to the influx of the inhabitants of the village, 17 km away Aldeia do Soba Kambambe. The county was named after Cambambe. 1941 the railway line from Zenza do Itombe was opened after Dondo, a branch line of the Luandabahn. Arisen in consequence of the improved transport routes here a number of industries ( cotton processing, building materials industry, textile industry ), especially after the opening of built since 1958 hydroelectric power plant of Cambambe Dam in 1960. During the Angolan Civil War presented all companies its activities entirely or largely a, to the hydroelectric power plant and the EKA brewery. Since 2013, the government promotes the re- establishment of industries in the district Cambambe, especially the textile industry settles again reinforced here.
