Carpathian bellflower ( Campanula carpatica )

The Carpathian bellflower (Campanula carpatica ) is a species of the genus of the bellflower (Campanula ) in the family of the bellflower family ( Campanulaceae ).

Features

The Carpathian bellflower is an evergreen perennial plant, the plant height ( 10) reaches 30 to 50 inches. It forms a Pleiokorm. The stem is erect or ascending and branched. The basal leaves are round or serrated heart-shaped and coarse, the leaf blade is 2.5 to 5 inches long. The flowers are borne singly. The crown is bowl-shaped and 30 to 40 millimeters wide, their corners are wide half-round, blunt or pointed. The capsule fruit is oval - cylindrical, the pores are near the top.

Bloom time is in June, partly it begins in May and lasts until August.

Occurrence

The Carpathian bellflower occurs in the southern and eastern Carpathians on rock bands in the mountain forest.

In addition to the nominate of the Carpathian bellflower a dwarf form was as a variety Campanula carpatica var turbinata (Schott, Nyman et Kotschy ) Nichols described. This is more compact, reaches stature heights of 10 to 15 centimeters and has up to 50 millimeters wide flowers.

Use

The Carpathian bellflower is widely used as an ornamental plant for rockeries and dry walls. It is in culture at least since 1770. There are numerous varieties whose crown ranges in color from dark blue to dark purple to light purple with white center. The variety ' Warley White' summer is green and has a lavender blue, filled with 4 Kronvierteln crown.

The Carpathian bellflower forms with other Bellflower species hybrids:

  • Campanula carpatica var turbinata Campanula × Raineri. Campanula × pseudoraineri hort, the leaves are hairy gray.
  • Campanula Campanula pulla or carpatica var turbinata Campanula × waldsteiniana. Campanula × stansfieldii hort, the crown is breitglockig, erect to nodding and purple.
  • Campanula Campanula carpatica × cochleariifolia. Campanula × haylodgensis hort, the leaf blade is only one (up to 2 ) inches long.
