Camphorsulfonic acid, often abbreviated as CSA (from English Camphorsulfonic acid) is an organosulfur compound and, like all sulfonic acids, a relatively strong acid. It is a colorless solid and soluble in many organic solvents. The camphorsulfonic acid is produced commercially or by sulfonation of camphor with sulfuric acid and acetic anhydride.
Camphorsulfonic acid is used as a organic acid, but also as an enantiomerically pure compound for the resolution of chiral amines and other basic compounds, in the form of their salts. The 1S- ( )- camphor-10 -sulfonic acid or its ammonium salt is used in the calibration of certain CD spectrometer.
