Canal de Pont-de-Vaux

The Canal de Pont -de- Vaux (sometimes also called Canal de la Reyssouze ) is a small ship canal in France, which runs in the Rhône-Alpes region in the department of Ain.

It is a channel of the type stitch passage branching off towards the city Fleurville on the left bank of the Saône and leads to the village of Pont -de- Vaux. The channel has a length of about three kilometers and has a single lock on the Saône confluence. The height difference is about two meters. The water supply is carried out at Pont -de- Vaux from the river Reyssouze.

History

End of the 18th century, the idea was to open up the Bresse on the waterway and to build for this purpose a ship canal from the Saône to Bourg -en- Bresse. After many interruptions, the canal was built by the Saône confluence up to Pont -de- Vaux and put into operation in 1843. A further construction was due to the competition from the railway no longer economical. Since the channel fell by and by, he was taken in the 1950s out of service in 1994 for reasons of tourism but set repaired.

Economic Importance

In Pont -de- Vaux, a leisure port is set up, which is mainly used by sports and houseboats. Even smaller passenger ships find their way through the A narrow channel and operate excursions on the Saône.
