Canal through Zuid-Beveland

The channel through Zuid- Beveland crosses the Dutch Zuid- Beveland Peninsula and connects the Westerschelde with the Eastern Scheldt, and was created 1850-1866 and has a length of about 9 km. More channels are located at the eastern end of the peninsula, the Scheldt - Rhine Canal, and at the southwest end of the channel through Walcheren. Both waterways provide a boat service from Antwerp to the Rhine. In the 19th century the canal was one of the busiest canals in Europe. Only with the opening of the Scheldt -Rhine Canal it lost its significance, but it is still important to connect with Gent (Belgium ). End of the 1980s, after the completion of the lock Oosterscheldeindeichung Wemeldinge closed and relocated the channel entrance.

Is located at the confluence with the Westerschelde at Hansweert a double lock with the dimensions 280 × 24 meters. Classified the channel with the CEMT-class VIb and navigable for pushing units with up to four barges. The water depth is 6.75 to 7.50 meters. About the channel lead two road bridges and a railway bridge. All bridges have in addition to a fixed part and one bascule bridge. The headroom is 10.50 m below the fixed parts and 9.50 m below the closed bascule bridges. In 2006 passed 43 374 cargo ships and 9,625 recreational boats the channel.

The A58 expressway passes under the canal through the Vlaketunnel.
